It’s easy to travel abroad now. Choosing a country to go I desided to visit Czech Republic remembering Prague Alpine Garden Society exhibition in May. Good time to see an old city and to watch Czech gardens flowering.
I was wonder Prague is so large city. I was not able to see kilometres of excellently saved streets. Prague born as a several towns on both Vltava sides. They grew and became a united city connected by Karl’s Bridge. If it were no cars and trams I would feel I have come to another century. Czechs save their city carefully and remember history and style are in details. Hatchs, numbers of buildings, dolls in windows, everything plunge you into historical atmosphere. Prague is a big museum living its modern life. We visited some Czech castles. Czechsky Krumlov was the most impressive. A little town near a middle-centuries castle seems to be saved since that times! Czech botanical
Botanical sites of Czech Republic are of the same importance. First of all every big city has its own Alpine Garden Club and Prague to. Every year it organise three shows: March, May and September. The second one represents spring plants in their perfect beauty. Moreover May is a time of rhododendrons flowering. All this makes late spring the best time to visit Prague. As soon as we arrived to Prague airport we felt Czech is a conifer heaven. Pines, spruces and junipers grew everywhere and they were healthy and of a venerable age. They followed our way to the hotel and met us at its steps. We were really shocked! Soon later name to our feeling born: “inferiority climate complex”. Prague is a very green city. It has many parks and public gardens and most of buildings have their own small plant compositions. Walls are twined by ivy and are not boring. Green accurate town with singing thrushs… First place we visited was of course Prague Alpine Garden Club show. Traditionally it takes place at the garden of monastery Karlovo Namesty in the historical centre of the city. Show garden has shade and sunny parts. Shade is full of flowering rhododendrons, orchids, ferns, trilliums and other shade rarities. Sunny part demonstrate several alpine constructions made by different kinds of stone. Granite, limestone and shale give all possibilities for plant growing. Though stone difference garden is balanced and harmonious. One of the collecting objects in Czech are “witch brooms”, enormous dwarf mutations of conifers. Club show represents some of them from collection of its chief, Vojtech Holubec. The second place to be visited is Karl’s University Botanical Garden. Fortunately it is in ten minutes walk from exhibition. Garden is well-groomed and it is a pleasure to have a look there. To visit the third point we had to live Prague. Small town near the capital, Pruhonice has an ideal Arboretum. It is a large park full of various trees mainly coniferous. It is not only collection it is a beautiful garden with a touch of Japanese style. Alleys of wondering trees lead to shade garden with running stream, ponds, bridges and collection of shade perennials. And the last place we had to be was Arboretum in Brno. In addition to a rich collection of tree peonies, rhododendrons and conifers, it is known mainly for its fantastic alpine garden constructions. The most grandiose is a deep ravine. Its walls are held by vertical concrete slabs and are made of different rocks. Then we saw a long flat concrete throughs filled with travertine pieces, an ideal place for many saxifrage species. More wonderful ideas for alpine plants we saw at the shade corner of the garden: throughs, walls made of tufa, alpinehouse. It is just a small part if Czech treasures. A lot of public and private gardens are waiting for our attention. This is why next spring I am going to visit Czech again… |
